Liverpool-based vTime has added augmented reality (AR) functionality to its social media platform.

Called vTime XR, the new functionality allows users to meet, chat and share with others in AR, virtual reality (VR) or 2D Magic Window mode.

While VR users stay fully-immersed in vTime’s detailed locations, AR mode allows them to place a live, 360-degree model of their chosen destination on any real-world, flat surface.

Users can explore, move around, shrink and grow the model, all while chatting and sharing with friends in a normal session.

Launching on iOS and Android, the new AR mode is available for all supported smartphones compatible with Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore.

“Creating the world’s first cross-reality social experience was such a unique opportunity for us that we couldn’t pass it up,” managing director Clemens Wangerin told VentureBeat in a statement.

“AR provides vTime with another immersive platform for future innovations, and vTime XR marks the next step in providing our global community with market-leading and highly engaging communication experiences, regardless of their technology of choice.”

Last year, the company raised $7.6 Million in funding, and AR/VR industry veteran Brian Blau joined as senior vice president from Gartner to drive international expansion.
