Sky News Arabia is launching studios that make use of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR).

The Abu Dhabi-based news channel is reportedly the first to do so in the region. Sky plc and Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation run Sky News Arabia as a joint venture.

The use of AR and VR is part of wider investment in “digital-first” content creation, according to Arab News.

Up to three new shows will be launched, including a daily live sport show that will use AR. A new documentary unit will also be set up.

“No matter when you tune into Sky News Arabia, you will find high-quality news output and in-depth reporting that is relevant to your life and the issues you care about most.”

Hani Abuayyash, head of news at Sky News Arabia, said: “No matter when you tune into Sky News Arabia, you will find high-quality news output and in-depth reporting that is relevant to your life and the issues you care about most.”

“These changes will help to bring the news to life, making our content more visually compelling and reflective of the fact that our viewers are increasingly consuming news online and want more live news coverage as it happens.”
