Sandrew, a serial entrepreneur, visual effects (VFX) pioneer and inventor with more than 34 patents and three decades of experience in founding and successfully building and operating VFX production studios in Hollywood, will work with NexTech president Paul Duffy to develop AR Studios and Presence, a proprietary location-based entertainment venue.
“At NexTech we are building an innovative concept for immersive entertainment that I’ve been waiting almost a decade to materialise,” said Sandrew. “Within AR Studios, the technology, talent and opportunity to create this new form of storytelling have converged into what promises to become a game changing entertainment venue.”
Duffy continued: “AR Studios might be the most exciting and important work we do at NexTech as we are creating a new mass medium which will change the viewing experience of content forever. Bringing Barry Sandrew’s entrepreneurial vision and technical expertise into the company will greatly expand NexTech’s value proposition as a leader and cutting-edge innovator in augmented reality.”
Toronto-headquartered NexTech formed AR Studios in Hollywood, California, earlier this year and set up Presence to display its immersive productions that use AR. Sandrew was initially brought into the project to advise.
Elsewhere in the business, two seasoned ecommerce managers recently arrived to develop NexTech’s online retail division.
Artem Tokariev joined NexTech as ecommerce managing director and Artemio Moya became its brand-product sales channel director.
They are building out sales channels, expanding lines and branding while automating NexTech’s current AR ecommerce platform in preparation for scaling revenue later this year.
