The story

Tencent Media Lab, the advanced audio and video communications research arm of WeChat operator Tencent, is extending its work to immersive and multimedia tech with a new appointment.

Dr Arianne Hinds has joined as principal researcher at Tencent Media Lab, a contributor to developing international next-generation video coding and decoding standards that was founded by the Chinese tech company, where she will continue her research into immersive and multimedia tech.

She is the US delegation lead to the Moving Pictures Experts Group, which sets global standards for audio and video compression and transmission. With extensive experience in immersive media for XR, light field panels, video and content distribution, Hinds also serves as chairperson for the International Committee for Information Technology Standards L3.1 group. It is focused on the standardisation of coded representation of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information.

Before joining Tencent, Hinds was principal architect for CableLabs, where she was responsible for developing the overarching strategy for immersive media and related technologies.

Last year, she co-founded the Immersive Digital Experiences Alliance, a non-profit industry group working towards developing an interchange and distribution format for streaming immersive media over commercial networks to drive XR displays and light field panels.

Commenting on her appointment at Tencent Media Lab, Hinds said: “I have tremendous respect for the culture of innovation at Tencent and the company’s focus on user experience. I am honoured and excited to bring my background and expertise to helping Tencent Media Lab explore and define the next frontier of immersive multimedia experiences.”

Shan Liu, vice president and general manager at Tencent, said: “Arianne is an accomplished researcher with a distinguished track record. Her deep experience makes her uniquely suited to support the mission of Tencent Media Lab. She shares our passion and a deep commitment to improving the media experience for the industry and people around the world.”
