The story

Product visualisation software company Threekit is offering its 3D and AR configurators for free to 100 retailers and brands.

The offer is being made to support the launch of the new AR feature from Chicago-based Threekit. In combination with the 3D configurator, retailers and brands can automatically generate the necessary 3D- and AR-ready files for every product customisation on web pages accessible via iOS and Android devices.

The offer is valid until 31 July and applies to one product in 3D configuration and AR, although 3D modelling and implementation services are not included.

“We’re so excited to introduce our configurable AR feature to help our customers enhance the online shopping experience.”

Ben Houston, Threekit

Ben Houston, founder and chief technology officer of Threekit, had this to say on the 3D and AR configurators: “As businesses adapt to the impacts of Covid-19, being able to showcase products online beautifully and efficiently has never been more important. The way that people experience, learn about, and purchase products today will have a lasting impact on what they expect from businesses in the future.”

“We’re so excited to introduce our configurable AR feature to help our customers enhance the online shopping experience.”

For retailers and brands, Threekit says its 3D and AR configurators drastically reduce the complexity of and resources required to develop 3D- and AR-ready models, with the traditional process for, say, a furniture company that sells 100 chairs with 10 colour variations per model demanding the creation of 2,000 3D and AR-ready files (one for iOS and one for Android) for a customer to see every possible combination.

When fully deployed on websites, online shoppers can easily interact with, customise and see a product in AR. They can add key features and change attributes such as colour, texture and style, all in real time.

Threekit has enjoyed significant success in helping businesses to create and manage product visuals, through its 3D, Virtual Photographer and now AR configurators.

Its client list includes Crate and Barrel, Steelcase, Herman Miller, and BostonTec. The company was founded in 2018 by Houston, a seasoned Hollywood visual effects software innovator, and a dedicated group of experienced computer graphics professionals.

In November 2019, Threekit raised $20 million in funding from Shasta Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, former San Francisco 49ers Hall of Famer Steve Young, and Marketo co-founder Phil Fernandez. It secured $10 million in seed investment shortly after launch.
