The story

iQiyi, China’s largest online video platform, will showcase the capabilities of its all-in-one VR headset with a virtual tour of Mount Everest.

Xinhua News Agency has named iQiyi as its official VR partner for its live coverage of the 2020 Mount Everest Elevation Survey. The online video platform will live stream the event in 4K high definition through VR using 5G technology on the Qiyu all-in-one headset.

Launched in 2018 as iQIYI’s latest foray into the hardware business, Qiyu represented an upgrade on the previous VR II, featuring 8K panoramic video playback functionality and image rendering technology, combined with a fully upgraded 4K LCD quick response screen.

iQiyi followed up last year with the lighter and more affordable Qiyu 2S, as the online video platform looks to provide an end-to-end consumer entertainment experience.

Its partnership with Xinhua News Agency comes on the 60th anniversary of the first successful summit of the world’s tallest mountain from the north face, and the 45th anniversary of China’s first survey of Mount Everest’s elevation and publication of its new height reading.

iQiyi hopes that this experience, along with its vast content library and its VR production capabilities in China, will position Qiyu as the go-to VR entertainment device for Chinese consumers.

The online video platform is exploring a number of opportunities in VR, including the placement of its devices in hotel rooms and appearing at events, such as the Beijing International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.

iQiyi stressed in 2018 that the future of VR “lies in the seamless integration of software and hardware”.

“In contrast to other global entertainment content platforms, iQiyi’s VR development strategy focuses on the two-way interaction between hardware and software in order to realise the ideal integration of technology and entertainment,” the online video platform explained. “iQiyi has accumulated a rich and expanding library of content and opened up the full VR industry chain to successfully take VR to the next level.”
