The story

Magic Leap is continuing its pivot toward the enterprise market with the appointment of a new leadership team that chief executive officer Peggy Johnson described as “world class talent” that will help her lead the mixed reality company into the future.

Johnson has moved quickly since taking the reins at Magic Leap in August to install the four executives. She aims to take advantage of the company’s “diverse, high performing team” and “one of the most robust IP portfolios I’ve seen”.

Walter Delph has joined Magic Leap as senior vice president and chief business officer. He most recently served as a partner and managing director at BCG Digital Ventures, Boston Consulting Group’s corporate venture capital firm.

Johnson has tasked Delph with transforming Magic Leap’s progress in strategy, marketing, corporate communications, sales, business development, and mergers and acquisitions.

Delph told Forbes last week he believes that immersive technology will “fundamentally” change daily life, but Magic Leap’s challenge lies in figuring out “which groups will take advantage of it today, tomorrow and in the future”.

Magic Leap is putting its money on enterprise customers. The company has had a difficult year, laying off a significant portion of its workforce and securing new funding.

Existing investors, including Google and Alibaba, have committed billions of dollars in funding to Magic Leap since 2011, but consumer take up of the Magic Leap 1 mixed reality headset has failed to materialise and founder Rony Abovitz stepped down as chief executive officer in May.

In Johnson, Magic Leap’s investors secured a chief executive officer who oversaw relationships with external partners and enterprises in her role at Microsoft, and it appears to be their hope that she can do the same for the mixed reality company.

Johnson is reportedly talking to Amazon about a tie-up that will see Magic Leap 1 packaged with the internet company’s cloud services, which could be one of the “key strategic enterprise partnerships” Abovitz mentioned earlier this year.

Joining Delph on the Magic Leap executive leadership team is Ana Lang as chief legal officer. She is an internal promotion, having previously served as the company’s senior vice president of legal and compliance.

Another internal promotion, Jose Baltazar, has taken on the newly created role of senior vice president and chief transformation and people officer.

Completing Johnson’s new-look leadership team is John Doherty, who has joined as chief financial officer.

According to Magic Leap, Doherty has spent more than 30 years in financial leadership positions directing substantial growth, corporate realignment and leading the turnaround of underperforming operations for businesses globally.

He joins from Interxion, a provider of carrier and cloud-neutral colocation data centre services in Europe, where he also served as chief financial officer.

Commenting on the leadership appointments, Johnson said: “As CEO, I am focused on transforming Magic Leap to capitalise on the opportunities ahead. That includes sharpening our focus and re-aligning our operations to fit the direction of the business with a focus on ROI for our customers. It was important for me to bolster our leadership team with world class talent that will help me lead this company into the future.”
