The story

Mining and tunneling industry supplier DSI Underground is boosting its portfolio of intelligent, digital solutions and services with the acquisition of virtual reality training provider Edvirt.

Its subsidiary, DSI Underground SMART, acquired Sweden-headquartered Edvirt for an undisclosed sum at the end of February.

The company, which is also soon being acquired by Sandvik, says the acquisition of Edvirt boosts its “investment in innovation to drive efficiency and safety across mining and tunneling operations forward”.

Edvirt’s virtual reality-based training and certification courses are designed to increase safety, enhance quality and reduce costs in underground operations, according to DSI Underground.

Virtual reality training in this area represents a compelling use case for the immersive technology, because it reduces risk and minimises cost in an otherwise dangerous and expensive-to-simulate industry.

Edvirt is also a smart choice from the available virtual reality training providers out there, because it’s made up of experienced mining and tunneling engineers, together with trainers and software developers, who have a strong track record of improving training standards and delivering innovative solutions.

Going forward, Edvirt will develop new services for DSI Underground SMART but will also continue to operate as a standalone company and serve its international customer base.

Following the completion of Sandvik’s acquisition, Edvirt will become part of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions.

‘Unmatched virtual training that supports safety and productivity’

Michael Reich, chief executive officer of DSI Underground, says “simulator-based, remote training courses and certification programmes are increasingly becoming part of our daily business”.

As such, the company is “very pleased to have gained an excellently positioned partner in Edvirt and welcome many knowledgeable new colleagues to join our team”.

“DSI Underground SMART and Edvirt will be able to offer an unmatched virtual training offering supporting safety and productivity across the underground development cycle. Together we will drive our growth forward and reinforce progress.”

Edvirt executives Tomislav Rogan and Eric Odkrans are excited about the opportunity that joining DSI Underground and Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions represents.

Rogan, chief executive officer of Edvirt, says: “Our mission has from the start been to develop the industry to become safer and smarter, utilising intelligent digital solutions such as training simulators. We are therefore very excited to join the DSI Underground and Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions family.”

Eric Odkrans, co-founder and head of business development at Edvirt, adds: “Edvirt is a great story of innovation becoming an industry standard. We are happy to go into a new phase increasing our digital service and product portfolio and reaching more clients globally together with our new partners.”
