The story

Pico Interactive has provided the first glimpse of its new Neo 3 headset.

The poster was released through the hardware and software company’s official Weibo account, and spotted by a local news website. Credit to virtual reality content creator and YouTuber Nathie for sharing the image on Twitter.

Pico confirmed that it was working on Neo 3, a successor to the all-in-one Neo 2 virtual reality headset, earlier this year.

The headset pictured is a consumer-only edition that will be released exclusively in Asia. The 10 May date on the poster suggests a launch event, meaning this Neo 3 could be available some time in Q3 2021.

Neo 2 and Neo 2 Eye are Pico’s top-of-the-line 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) headsets. They feature 4K resolution, enterprise functionality, a counterbalanced design for extended wear, spatial stereo speakers and an all-PU facial interface for hygiene.

The Neo 2 Eye model includes eye tracking functionality to enable enterprises to gain a deeper understanding of customer behavior and enhance training efficiency.

A closer look at the poster for Neo 3 suggests this will also be a 6DoF headset, with four cameras (as opposed to the current edition’s two) positioned in the corners and dual controllers providing inside-out tracking to rival Oculus Quest 2, the current leading consumer and enterprise all-in-one virtual reality headset.

The controller is similar to Oculus Touch, with a trigger, two main buttons and an input method on the grip.

It’s been a busy first three months of the year for Pico, which also closed a $37.4 million B+ funding round last month and recently opened up Pico Studios in Asia to third-party developers eager to sell their apps and games to virtual reality users in China, South Korea and Japan, where the company caters for the consumer market.
