The story

HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition finally has a release date and price.

First announced in September 2020, the enterprise- and developer-focused headset, which builds on the professional use capabilities of the underlying PC virtual reality headset by adding sensors for sight and heart rate, as well as eye and facial tracking, will be available to buy next month on HP’s website.

It will cost $1,249—just over double the base HP Reverb G2’s current price—but will significantly enhance training, learning, wellbeing, collaboration and creation by providing more data to enterprise users and developers, according to HP.

The integrated eye tracking of HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition will also enable foveated rendering, meaning the headset will only fully render images based on the user’s gaze. This will reduce GPU load and improve image quality within the user’s foveal region.

HP and its partners focused on cognitive load during the development of the Omnicept Edition, to understand what data they could collect to better tailor virtual reality experiences for a range of use cases.

That work, to understand how much of a brain’s working memory resources are being used while in virtual reality, led them to focus on sight and heart rate, as well utilise the latest technology in eye and facial tracking.

According to HP, the Omnicept Edition can be used to:

Training: Build apps that measure a user’s cognitive load—giving businesses a better understanding of the trainee’s performance and ability to make decisions. In turn, they can deliver experiences that better prepare teams to help deal with high-risk situations.

Wellbeing: Develop experiences that can take advantage of real-time insights to reduce stress, improve comfort and assist breakthroughs.

Creation and collaboration: Build experiences that maximise productivity and reduce development time. With integrated sensors, apps can track user engagement and assess user responses at any moment. And, with the face camera, avatars can display authentic facial expressions.

HP also announced that it is adding support for HP VR Spatial Audio to the HP Omnicept SDK (software development kit), for better and more personalised audio experiences in virtual reality.

The HP Omnicept SDK, which supports both Unity and Unreal Engine, is available in three tiers, with the core tier offering free access for educational purposes. Revenue sharing will be in place for other tiers, while the full enterprise tier costs $1,499.
