The story

Pico Interactive has revealed an image of and given details about the Neo 3 virtual reality headset being released in Asia later this year.

Neo 3 will be Pico’s next-generation flagship 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) consumer headset in Asia, where the company has significant market penetration.

An enterprise version will serve as Pico’s primary device for all markets outside of Asia and will be available in late summer. More details “will come soon”, according to the virtual reality hardware and software company.

The consumer edition runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform and boasts WiFi 6 and optical controllers.

The addition of four wide-angle cameras brings millimetre-level positioning and tracking to Neo 3. Pico says 3D maps of an environment can be reconstructed in real-time, and stable tracking can be achieved even in a low-texture environment and bright or dark settings.

In addition, Neo 3 has an updated curved screen for sleeker form factor as well as 90 hz experiences. The single 6DoF controller also uses 32 optical tracking sensors.

Comfort and sanitisation are front and centre of the headset’s design. It’s counterbalanced and adds three physical IPD (interpupillary distance) adjustments to suit the user’s visual preferences, and is made of easy-to-clean all-PU material.

Pico Neo 3

The launch of Neo 3 follows the successful completion of Pico’s series B and B+ funding rounds earlier this year, which gave the company the resources necessary to provide a marked improvement on Neo 2.

Henry Zhou, chief executive officer of Pico, continues: “From our new optical-controller tracking solution to complex environment positioning, the Neo 3 is building off of the Neo 2 to offer the latest technology to give users an amazing, immersive experience.”

“Between the Pico Neo 3 headset’s state-of-the-art-technology and Pico’s new publishing division—Pico Studios—developers have the tools to get even more creative with the apps and games they create.”

Pico Studios in Asia is open to third-party developers around the world who are eager to sell their apps and games to virtual reality users in China, South Korea and Japan, where the company caters for the consumer market.

To take advantage of this opportunity, developers must submit their 6DoF games and apps for review.

If accepted, the game or app will be listed on the Pico Store and become accessible to users in China, Japan and South Korea. To submit or inquire for more information, email content@pico-interactive.com.
