The story

Digital surgery company Activ Surgical has launched an augmented reality-based software suite that offers real-time tissue assessment in the form of previously unavailable visual overlays.

ActivInsights, along with the company’s interoperable imaging module, ActivSight, are the first commercially available products of the ActivEdge solution, which is being designed to transform massive amounts of data gathered intra-operatively to provide surgeons with real-time guidance in the operating room.

Activ Surgical, based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, plans to launch ActivInsights in the second half of 2021, with 13 healthcare systems already signed up. The augmented reality software suite will be commercially available in 2022, on a technology-as-a-service pricing model.

The ActivSight device

ActivSight, an intraoperative device that enables and delivers enhanced surgical visualisation and received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration in April, serves as the ‘eyes’ of the platform, allowing surgeons to visualise blood flow in real time.

The solution is designed to support surgeons in the detection of blood flow during surgical procedures, replacing the traditional method of using expensive surgical visualisation towers and injecting a dye into the patient.

Meaningful visual data

The first offering from the ActivInsights software suite that will be made available to surgeons is Perfusion View Insights, which will provide the ability to see blood flow and perfusion in real time, without the use of traditional dyes.

Activ Surgical says the ActivInsights augmented reality software suite will be underpinned by a large annotated data set to be developed over the next 12 months.

Perfusion View Insights visual overlays are currently derived from mulit-spectral imaging. Activ Surgical plans to integrate AI and machine learning capabilities in the future as more annotated data are collected and processed.

Commenting on the launch, Dr Peter Kim, founder and chief science and medical officer at Activ Surgical, says: “I founded Activ Surgical in 2017 with the goal of democratising surgical care by extending insights from leading surgeons to all surgical systems, regardless of location. Bringing our ActivInsights offerings to market is a significant step in realising this goal as it will provide meaningful visual data that was previously unavailable in the OR to surgeons all across the globe.”
