➨ Experiences and activities are designed to address mental wellbeing and cognition
➨ REAL i-Series follows the launch of the REAL Immersive System, which is aimed at physical rehabilitation
Global healthcare company Penumbra has launched a new virtual reality solution for mental health conditions, adding to a healthcare-focused immersive technology portfolio that began with physical rehabilitation.
The new REAL i-Series solution features a virtual reality headset with intuitive gaze navigation and exclusive experiences and activities, including REAL Connect for one-to-one real-time video and audio communication.
The experiences and activities are designed to address mental wellbeing and cognition. They include animated, interactive experiences via the Serene Lake app and 360-degree video instructor-guided and self-guided travel and nature experiences.
Together, they provide more than 10 hours of immersive content for cognitive activation, distraction therapy, reminiscence therapy, mindfulness practice and relaxation.
REAL i-Series also includes REAL Connect, which is designed to enhance immersive experiences through social connection by allowing users to share their virtual reality activities with another individual through a web-based portal.
Penumbra says REAL i-Series is designed for a broad range of care providers and mental health professionals working across hospitals, clinics and senior living communities, in need of tools to aid cognition and mental wellbeing in patients with depressed and anxious moods, pain and discomfort, loneliness and age-related challenges.
‘The tremendous potential of virtual reality for healthcare’
Adam Elsesser, president, chairman and chief executive officer of Penumbra, comments: “The REAL i-Series extends our current offering beyond physical rehabilitation. It is a purpose-built system that harnesses the tremendous potential of virtual reality for healthcare and offers people access to the latest technology, whether at the clinical setting or at home, to engage more fully in their care.”
REAL i-Series follows the launch of the REAL Immersive System, which is designed for clinicians to address the individual needs of high-acuity to high-functioning patients undergoing rehabilitation.
Its activities address upper extremity impairments, core and balance, cognition, functional uses, activities of daily living training, distraction and low stimulation environments.
Each REAL Immersive System set includes a storage case, sensors, a tablet and an HTC Vive headset, which requires a local Wi-Fi connection.
The system was purpose-built for rehabilitation, according to Penumbra, with activities specifically designed to exercise upper-body functional movement patterns. It also, unlike most mobile or all-in-one virtual reality headsets, uses multiple body sensors to accurately track movements.
