Featuring Lynx, Canon, VMWare, Magic Leap, Facebook/Oculus, HTC Vive and Varjo

This week’s The Reality Wire is big on new headsets, most notably from Lynx, the startup dedicated to building a versatile and open device capable of displaying both virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) content. The company is seeking backers on Kickstarter and is already funded.

This is one to watch for enterprise and professional users, as a possible alternative to Oculus given the promised €425 (non-EU) to €530 price range, and mixed reality capability.

The other headsets have not actually been announced—yet. They are expected to come at three events this month that were (un)surprisingly scheduled for consecutive Thursdays, starting with HTC Vive next week.

It is worth noting that while new headsets are likely, they are not guaranteed. HTC Vive has been teasing what looks like a head-worn or -mounted display, but the company did release two headsets earlier this year. Facebook is reportedly set to launch Oculus Quest Pro—as long as the company does not suffer another outage.

Varjo, however, is expanding into software and could be providing an update on Varjo Reality Cloud or something like it. Definitely sign up to the events and find out.

Elsewhere, Canon has revealed its first Dual Fisheye Lens for stereoscopic 3D 180° VR capture in 8K and VMWare’s recently announced Workspace ONE XR Hub is coming to Magic Leap 2.
