The story

Software company Autodesk is taking the first steps of its “XR journey” with the acquisition of The Wild.

Announced today for an undisclosed sum, Autodesk will acquire The Wild, its immersive collaboration platform for architects, designers and engineers, and IrisVR—which was itself acquired last year.

“A convergence of events makes this the right time for Autodesk’s acquisition of The Wild’s talent and technology as the foundation of Autodesk’s XR (extended reality) journey,” explained Nic Fonta, general manager of XR at Autodesk, in a statement.

He continued: “Accessibility, affordability, as well as the future of digital twins and metaverse, create the right environment and business rationale for advancing XR technology within the AEC industry.”

This “convergence of events” includes a need for greater workforce resiliency and remote collaboration amid the global pandemic, the increasing accessibility and affordability of professional grade virtual reality and augmented reality (VR and AR) equipment, and sustainability, with instantaneous and immersive cloud collaboration better for the environment than in-person collaboration.

The Wild and IrisVR certainly tick all of these boxes. Both platforms are compatible with a range of VR headsets, enable multi-user collaboration, provide top-notch productivity tools, and draw data for design review and model coordination from various sources, including Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit and Navisworks, as well as Rhinoceros and Trimble SketchUp.

Commenting on the acquisition, Andrew Anagnost, chief executive officer and president of Autodesk, said: “Our acquisition of The Wild reflects the rapid transformation taking place in the building industry, from the complexity of projects to the geographic diversity of teams who design, construct, and operate them.”

“XR is a must-have business imperative for today and an important part of Autodesk’s Forge platform vision.”

Gabe Paez, founder and chief executive officer of The Wild, added: “The Wild and Autodesk share a common mission of encouraging a more productive and collaborative AEC industry, and in this case, one where teams can resolve issues in minutes from their desks rather than the traditional miles of costly travel.”
